Focus on Community is a community development program designed to strengthen and empower community members and groups by creating links between artists and health professionals/community workers, local businesses, agencies and organisations so that they can work together with minority, disadvantaged and hard to reach groups in a creative, meaningful and sustainable way. The program will also enable valuable information on environmental issues and climate change be incorporated into program activities to ensure hard to reach and disadvantaged groups be engaged, informed and empowered.
The program aims to increase the capacity of artists and performers in the Mount Alexander Shire catchment by helping identify their needs and barriers to working with hard to reach groups around various themes. The program will also provide links with disadvantaged groups and support organisations to provide opportunities for them to connect with local arts projects and funding opportunities. The development of increased skills and connections will build and enable rich, self-determined and empowering community art programs that strengthen our social, cultural, economic, ecological, educational, spiritual and political foundations.

| Through workshops in the Mount Alexander Shire local community members are being skilled up to increase their capacity to identify project ideas and work with the community. The workshop, to be repeated throughout the year, has been designed to inform and address ways to build projects that would allow community members to act on issues around sustainability and climate change in a creative, engaging and meaningful way. In the first workshop a number of participants identified project ideas that they were interested in pursuing, and through the Focus on Community project support, further useful links will be explored through the local community that might see these projects through, supporting people to build sustainable, creative and meaningful projects.
